Global pump and water technology leader Wilo has taken a massive leap forward in its decarbonization journey by officially inaugurating a state-of-the-art sustainable energy system at its manufacturing site in Hof, Germany. The groundbreaking project is designed to provide the facility with heat generated entirely from renewable sources, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly industrial manufacturing.
A Fully Renewable Heat Supply
At the core of this innovative infrastructure is a highly integrated energy concept that cleverly combines biogas-derived heat with a biomass woodchip heating system. This closed-loop approach not only eliminates the need for fossil fuels but also turns local agricultural and industrial byproducts into valuable energy.
A key feature of the initiative is its deep collaboration with the local community. A biogas plant located just southwest of the factory utilizes slurry from neighboring farms to generate energy. Meanwhile, a woodchip heating system situated to the north of the site repurposes wood residues generated directly from Wilo’s own manufacturing processes. Impressively, around 300 tonnes of wood waste are converted into woodchips each year to keep the facility running.
To complete the green energy triad, renewable energy sources now supply approximately 60% of the Hof site’s total electricity demand.
Massive Environmental and Operational Impact
The transition to this 100% renewable heating system has yielded staggering environmental benefits for the Hof plant. By completely phasing out fossil fuels for thermal energy, the new infrastructure eliminates the facility’s previous consumption of around 179,000 liters of heating oil per year.
Consequently, the project is expected to slash the site’s annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,600 tonnes. This dramatic reduction not only helps Wilo meet its stringent internal climate targets but also significantly improves the local air quality and environmental footprint of the Hof region.

The inauguration ceremony, attended by representatives from regional government, business, academia, and agriculture, highlighted the power of regional collaboration in achieving global sustainability goals.
